A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.
Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. It is our intention to enable children to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information.
The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming.
Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology –as active participants in a digital world.

Intent

It is our intention to enable children to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information.

Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology –as active participants in a digital world.
At Fairfield Park Lower School, we understand the importance of integrating online safety into our curriculum so that it is covered frequently and in depth from EYFS to Year 4. Each year group teaches the importance of using technology safely and appropriately. We aim to ensure that every effort is made to safeguard our children and prepare them for the evolving digital world that we now live in.
Implementation
At Fairfield Park school we provide a clear and effective, cross curricular scheme of work that provides coverage in line with the National Curriculum. Teaching and learning facilitates progression across all key stages within the strands of digital literacy, information technology and computer science.
The children have:
- Access to resources which aid in the acquisition of skills and knowledge.
- Access to the hardware (computers, tablets, programmable equipment) and software that they need to develop knowledge and skills of digital systems and their applications.
- A clear and effective scheme of work that provides coverage in line with the National Curriculum.
- Children will have the opportunity to explore and respond to key issues such as digital communication, cyberbullying, online safety, security and social media.
- Strong Curriculum links to all other areas of the National Curriculum and opportunities for the safe use of digital systems are considered in wider curriculum planning.
- The importance of online safety is embedded throughout each key phase including early years. This is also highlighted in Internet Safety Week and assemblies linked to online safety.
- Parents are informed when issues relating to online safety arise and further information/support is provided if required.
- School website provides clear information, support and guidance on how to support online safety at home.
- Children have access to green screen materials to enhance their love of learning and creativity in creating short clips.
- Children have the ‘Learning street’, an inviting new room to teach computing in, with space and resources readily available to use.
Impact
After the implementation of the computing curriculum at Fairfield Park Lower School, the children will be digitally literate in using a range of technological devices and able to engage and access the world on its digital platform. They will be able to communicate successfully and safely and apply their skills across all of the National Curriculum.
Children will have a secure knowledge of the implications of technology and using the internet safely. This is important in a society where technologies and trends are rapidly evolving.
Children will be equipped, not only with the skills and knowledge to use technology effectively and for their own benefit, but more importantly – safely. The biggest impact we want on our children is that they understand the consequences of using the internet and that they are also aware of how to keep themselves safe online.
Children will be able to apply the British Values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law and liberty when using digital technology.
As children become more confident in their abilities in Computing, they will become more independent and develop key life skills such as problem-solving, logical thinking and self-evaluation become second nature.
