Relationships and Health Education
At Fairfield Park, we value Relationships and Health Education (RHE). We are GLOBAL CITIZENS.
RHE should provide children with the opportunities to reach their full potential and develop spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, morally, physically and socially. Through our carefully planned curriculum, emphasis on values and a dedication to British Values and pastoral care, we provide children with the knowledge, skills and resilience to become well-educated and rounded young adults, ready to take their place in the world.
Our RHE curriculum has been split into 3 different themes that are covered throughout each year group.
During our Relationship theme, children will explore what makes a happy and respectful relationship. Fairfield Park provides the opportunities for children to learn the fundamental building blocks and characteristics for positive relationships with family, friends and others. From the beginning of their Fairfield Park journey, children are taught how to take turns, how to treat each other with kindness, consideration and respect, the importance of honesty and truthfulness, permission seeking and giving, and the concept of personal privacy. With the ever-changing times, children are also taught that the principles of positive relationships also apply to online relationships.
During our Health theme, children will explore positive physical health and mental wellbeing. The children are given the information that they need to make informed decisions about their own health and wellbeing, exploring what is normal, unusual and how to seek support from appropriate sources if any issues arise. At Fairfield Park, children are given strategies to improve their ability to self-regulate, build resilience and respond calmly and rationally to any challenge. In a world where health problems are becoming more prevalent, our school aims to reduce the negative stigma attached to health issues and promote ways for children to improve their own health, seek support when necessary and be open about their feelings and struggles, and support others in theirs.
During our Living in the Wider World theme, children are taught the skills that are needed to equip them for the wider world. We believe in going above the government guidance by discussing how to manage their money, how to look after others, the community and the environment, careers they would like to pursue, and in KS2 how media can influence people. By giving children this knowledge, we are confident that they leave Fairfield Park as confident, safe and considerate members of the community.

Intent
At Fairfield Park, we believe that RHE is an integral part of children’s development. We believe that there must be a balance between a broad and ambitious curriculum and outstanding wider personal development. We believe that our carefully planned curriculum, along with our values-based education, dedication to British Values and pastoral care, will equip all children with the knowledge and skills to become well-educated and rounded young adults, ready to take their place in the world. We aim to provide children with a nurturing environment and opportunities to reach their full potential, spiritually, emotionally, intellectually, morally, physically and socially.
Our three drivers are focused around creating responsible and conscious members of society and are linked to RHE.
- Environment
We are encouraging the children to think carefully about how to look after their environment and community and think about how their actions affect others.
- The Arts
We are giving children the opportunity to explore their feelings and a range of ways to express themselves healthily.
- Diversity
We want the children to be accepting members of society who celebrate the diversity of our multicultural country. We are ensuring that children are respectful and kind members of society.
We believe that children should be provided with an education that develops their character. By the end of their time at Fairfield Park Lower School, children should:
- Have consideration and respect for each other, their school and the community that they live in, showing good manners, courtesy, resilience and empathy.
- Be healthy members of society by understanding what constitutes to a healthy lifestyle and positive physical and mental health.
- Understand what makes a good relationship based on mutual respect and how to seek support if needed.
- Celebrate each person’s diversity and uniqueness.
- Be independent and responsible members of society.
- Develop self-confidence and self-esteem and make informed positive choices regarding personal and social issues.
- Be prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Implementation
At Fairfield Park Lower School, we are passionate about teaching our broad and exciting curriculum through questions. By giving time for children to explore and answer these questions, it allows them to explore them deeply and gain a deeper understanding. The children’s questions will explore the themes set out in the National Curriculum:
- Families and people who care for me
- Caring friendships
- Respectful relationships
- Online relationships
- Being safe
- Mental wellbeing
- Internet safety and harms
- Physical health and fitness
- Healthy eating
- Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
- Health and prevention
- Basic first aid
- Changing adolescent body
RHE is taught in weekly half hour sessions to cover the broad PSHE national curriculum. We have ensured that the ambitious curriculum is logically sequenced so that themes are built upon and revisited, allowing children to grow in confidence. RHE is taught by the class teacher through engaging and exciting activities which allow for open discussion and debate. These activities are planned in an age-appropriate way and take into consideration the children’s understanding and previous knowledge. A range of activities are planned to complement our broad curriculum such as debate, role play, drama and visitors where appropriate.
Around the school, we promote good behaviour and positive character traits, including courtesy, respect, truthfulness, courage and generosity. To do this, we have clear and high expectations on behaviour and well-planned provisions for character and personal development. This promotes a sense of belonging, identity and pride along with good mental wellbeing. We also give children the opportunity to take part in volunteering and service around the school and in the local community. This allows children to complement their learning on respect to others and the environment.
Impact
Following the implementation of the broad and age-appropriate curriculum, children will be respectful, independent, responsible and confident members of society within our community and the wider world.
Children’s understanding of our curriculum will be assessed through creative ways such as quizzes and self-expression to show what they have learnt throughout each unit.
The children will be equipped with the skills needed to maintain positive and healthy lifestyles, relationships and contributions to society. These can be seen when meeting the children at Fairfield Park Lower School as the children show their values, manners and understand how to interact safely with others. As they become more confident throughout each RHE theme, children will understand their personal role in society.
